NOTAN

Get 3 shades/values of black marker   Dark   Medium   Light    also a small pad 4x4in

Squint the eyes

Do the dark mass first because everything will relate to that mass value

"Far better to suggest the flowers that try to paint each one"

Composition is critical

Portrait  landscape   panorama  square???

You do not have to accept the details of a photo - most common mistake

What is the painting about?

 Play of light on trees

Majesty of the mountains

Find as many dark shapes as you can and then see how you can emphasise the light using those dark shapes.  Its the darks that make the light shine out.

He cropped down to the house area stating that there was way too much detail in the original photo.

Practice on panels  3mm MDF   8x 10in

Georgian Daler Rowney good provided you use it generously.  Van Gough also good.

Long flat brushes  No 8 for 3/4 of the work       Daler Rowney

Dont go smaller than a no 6 brush

                             Wash/Ground

Burnt Sienna   Rub over with tissue

Set horizon line    No pencil - use a brush

"The magic begins with exploring colour temperature"

Decisions on what colours to use -all the colours your need are in the primaries

TW    2 yellows> Lemon and Y Ochre

Lemon Y best for anywhere there is green foliage

Cad Orange  Handy         Cad Red Light  (warm)   Al Crimson (cool)

B Sienna       UMB             Cobalt takes getting use to!

This is the finished Painting

Block shadows family colours in     UMB + A Crimson

To differenciate  areas where the values are very similar you use Colour temperature

On a sunny day all your shadows are cool - BLUE

Your colour of light is YELLOW

Use cooler colours and softer edges to get Aerial perspective

This is the Shadow family painted in

The Light Family - clean brush No 8

How much white paint?  as little as possible.  You CANNOT get white in your shadows!!

Trees and bushes        Greens    >  Lemon Y  + UMB  (no TW)

Desaturate Greens with A Cr     Red is a nice antidote for too much greens

Violets and purples "A painting never suffers when you adda violet"\

Too much solvent creates a mess    almost dry brush

Road   TW into BS makes it very cold so add Yellow - it is sunny!  Warm light needed

Develop shapes and keep values

Cerulean Blue to cool colours   >>>    Roof   Side of house     distant greens

Play with colour temperature in the dark bush  Pay attention to keeping the correct value

Building the Layers     Fat over lean    More thick and more oil

Thick layers esp in the light areas    Thick  Vibrant paint

Be aware of the direction of the light     foliage in shadow/in light / cast shadows

Dont blend     economy of brush strokes

Firm edge for focal areas

Check that you have not lost the dark shapes before you finish

If there is too much detail - loose it.  Suggest detail only.  Detail in non important area - not good

Big shapes are more effective that lots of little shapes

Does the focal point still stand out?  Check that all the painting is not busy.

Check edges

Aerial perspective - cooler and lighter - soft edges - "shadows like to be mysterious"

Brush work creates a signature - how you hold the brush - loose

"If you use lots of paint everything takes care of itself"

Orange and UMB give a warm green

If you want  light to stand out put a cool next to it -

Detail - A few dots and dashes go a long way - \
